In Hatha Yoga there is a simple practice that is recommended in Ayurveda as part of a daily routine. It is called Surya Namaskar or “Sun Salutation”.
This practice is Tridoshic, which means it is good for all the three Doshas. This comprises a series of ten or twelve yoga postures done in a systematic sequence (flexion and extension with breath work).
It is recommended to be performed twice a day, during sunrise and sunset, for general health maintenance.
It can be performed slowly or if one is well trained, it can be performed quickly to become an aerobic workout.
These exercises contribute to strength and flexibility of all the major muscle groups, balance the spine, encourage circulation, enhance breathing, reduce resistance in joints, and stimulate internal organs. Performing Sun Salute cycles regularly improves the mind-body connection, which allows healing and nourishment to take place in all facets of the person.
When performing these exercises it is important to start slowly with a few cycles. As you become more comfortable you can work up to twelve cycles per session. Also, each of the poses should move fluidly into the next using breathing to enhance this movement. Inhales are used to lengthen or elongate the body and exhales are used to bend or fold the body.
